Now, do you have any questions for me? – Interview Advice

Not many people like to go on interviews. Well, actually, I don’t know anyone who likes them. I know that I don’t. I get super nervous, over think everything, and then once it’s over I think about everything I did wrong.

One time, I had an interview and I completely bombed the last question. The last question is almost always the same. It’s the “Now, do you have any questions for me,” question.

Now, do you have any questions for me? - Interview AdviceI told the interviewer “No, I don’t have any questions for you,” and the two interviewers looked at each other, shook their head and still waited for me to ask a question. I could tell they really wanted me to ask one, but I already said no. I could tell they were even a little upset – almost as if I sealed my fate and they knew I failed the interview by not asking them a question.

You would think it’s a super easy one, but there are ways to fail it. Most people answer “No, I don’t have any questions,” but that’s not usually the best way to answer it. If you say that you don’t have any questions, then you may actually not get the job! You want to show that you are interested in the job and the company, and asking questions will help show the person interviewing you that you are interested.

Should you ask about benefits?

Normally, it’s not wise to ask about benefits at the end of the first interview. You may not have even gotten the job, and it sort of makes it look like you are only in it for the benefits and for yourself.

However, in some cases this is a good question because if you wait too long, then it may be too late to ask it. You should gauge where you are in the interview process before you ask this question.

Other questions that you may not want to ask include any personal questions related to the interview (such as why they left their last job or who they hate at the company), how much vacation time there is, and so on. You want to ask questions that show that you are interested in the job and the company – not questions that show that you can’t wait until you are off from work.

What are some good questions to ask? 

There are several good questions for you to ask when posed with this last and final important question. You should always try to make it fit for the exact company, industry, and position, but below are some good starters for you to morph into your own question.

Also, please don’t start grilling your interviewer, usually just a few questions is fine – if you start asking 10 or 20 questions then they may think you are a tad crazy 🙂

Here are some questions that you may want to think about asking:

  • How is the company’s culture?
  • What is the typical work day or work week for this position?
  • What is the normal advancement process at the company?
  • When is the starting date for this position?
  • What is the next step in the interview process?

  1. A long, long time ago during an interview I was asked, “So, how would you describe yourself?” to which I answered, “Mostly water.” Needless to say that was the end of my interview. I thought it was a very clever and truthful answer, however the interviewer did not seem to think so. Oh well… guess they weren’t looking for creative people.

  2. Don’t ask about benefits. Be confident. Any money issues you can ask about after the offer. GET THE OFFER!

    Ask the interviewer questions so that they can talk about themselves. How long have they been working there. What do they like? What has their career path been. Get them to talk, and you don’t have to.
