How to Become an Online Tutor

Knowing the basics of offering private classes, and having inside knowledge on how to attract students is only the beginning. Nowadays tutoring or offering online classes doesn’t have to be restricted to face to face time in some library, community center, or crowded dining room table. With some pretty nifty software and programs, you can now offer tutoring online. That means that you can offer your skills as a tutor to people in China, Europe, California, or even just the kid next door.

If you want to be able to offer your tutoring services to people all over the world, tutoring online is by far the best way to achieve this- it’s one of those money making ideas that is easy and actually quite fulfilling. Here is a simple how-to for getting started and succeeding with as an online tutor.

Get Skype

With the advancing wonders of online communication, it wasn’t long before communication geniuses designed the masterpiece that is Skype. Skype is a communications platform that allows people to chat through text, using voice devices and built in software, and to even make phone calls to international phone numbers. Not only that, but Skype users can play games, share files, share links, share photos, and basically have conversations that count on the internet. With a free Skype account you can easily conduct lectures using the video chat feature. You can teach and your students can take notes all without you having to get out of your PJs (although you might want to put on a t-shirt over your PJ top).

If you don’t already use Skype, you should download it and put it to good use. Not only does Skype allow you to communicate with current and potential students all over the world, but it also allows you to conduct lessons using a set of headphones, a mic, and the one or all of the following forms of data sharing.

Dropbox and Google Documents

Online document and file sharing programs are great for online tutoring because they allow you to share documents without having to email. All people with access to the documents can download, upload, print, delete, and even change the content of the documents. With Dropbox, you can store your files, sync your files, and share your files with other people- those you give access to. You can create a file specifically for each student and their lessons. With desktop access, your students can double click on the Dropbox icon and get access to their lesson plans, notes, FAQs, or whatever else you decide to use in your tutoring.

Google Documents is another innovation from the masters at Google. With Google Documents you have the same features as Dropbox but with Google Documents, everyone can be working on the same document at once. This allows you to correct your student’s work live with them watching and working alongside you. Both Google Documents and Dropbox are free so there is no risk in using them.

Yahoo and MSN Messenger Whiteboard

Tutoring online is a money making idea that takes a bit more than the ability to chat. Good thing that there are online chat platforms that also offer and support Whiteboard plugins that allow both people in the chat to doodle and write on an interactive whiteboard. With the whiteboard feature offered through Yahoo Messenger and MSN Messenger you and your students can work on problems live without having to be in the same place.

Tutoring Software

As you’d expect, because online tutoring is not a new money making idea, there are companies out there offering tutoring software for a price. You can purchase and use this software, but there are cheaper and even free options that will allow you to conduct tutoring sessions without costing you any of the money you’re making. Using free software is easy because so many chat services offer plugins that you can use for tutoring. Why pay for what you can get for free? Well, tutoring software is specifically designed for use in online tutoring so it has features and bonuses that you won’t find on Skype, Yahoo, or MSN. You can check some of these features out here.

Online Tutoring Companies

If you want to work on your own as an online tutor, you can take the information listed above and get to work now, but if you would prefer the stability of working with an actual company, you should consider working for an online tutoring company. Online tutoring companies are always looking for qualified tutors, and they pay per hour. The more students you take on, the more money you can make, but much like any business, the company gets a cut of what you make. They charge one price, take their cut, and give you what’s left. Check out our article on the pros and cons of working for a tutoring company, if this is an option you are considering.

The internet is the information super highway so it makes sense that you can use that super highway to provide information to people who are paying for it. As an online tutor you can make money doing something you love without the hassle of meeting somewhere public or leaving the comfort of your cozy dorm room.
