A quiet night in: an exercise in frugal saving.

image1As much as any couple, family or group of friends might like going out, it’s never cheap. Whether it’s fine dining or going out to your local bar or restaurant, these are costs that add up all too easily. They may seem cheap once in a while but once you start doing it on a weekly or semi-regular basis, it becomes a larger and larger chunk of your expenses.

In contrast to this, understanding the benefits of a quiet night in can prove useful. More than offering something different and relaxing it can demonstrate a way to stay cheap and cost effective whilst still enjoying the usual perks of life.

If you go out to eat, you should know how much this can cost. Cooking for yourself is usually the cheapest but there are still other options. For instance, if you have the urge for Chinese food, it may be cheaper for everyone to pool money together for chinese takeaways than visit your local restaurant. It’s much cheaper and doesn’t have the added costs of additional drinks and restaurant prices and other service charges that are often forgotten about.

Likewise, if you’re not going out, there is nothing to stop you from being social. Your home can prove entertaining enough with the right company. Cheap entertainment can be anything from a movie rental (if you’re only going to watch it once, don’t buy something you don’t need) to various games, which offer entertainment again and again. These are all cheap, whether you use it once or buy it to use again and again. This is another lesson to be learnt in saving, by understanding the real value of something.

If you come across some movies that you and your friends love, it makes sense to purchase the DVD so you can all watch it whenever you like. Luckily, you can save money by ordering your DVDs online, so you do not have to worry about breaking the bank. To make things more interesting, consider having each person purchase a DVD online and then choosing between your favorites every time you gather.

Additional expenses

Hopefully the two areas above should highlight how easy it is to cut down on those little costs for every social occasion but there are always other areas to look at. Take your appearance, for instance. If you don’t go out to an expensive restaurant you might not need to risk your best shirt or shoes. It can also save on other expenses, such as getting a taxi home late if you’ve been drinking or other travel costs.  So, next time you think you might go out, suggest staying in to the others and see how much can be saved.

Models Beware: How to Spot Modeling Scams

Modeling is one of the most ‘cool’ money making ideas that we cover. Unfortunately, it is also one of the most scammer infested. If you are naive, this is a difficult field to survive. Even before you realize what happened, you can get caught up in a scam. You can avoid being a victim if you know what to look for.

Scams usually start by a scam artists approaching you with compliments followed by a sentence such as, “Have you ever thought about a modeling career?”  While there are some who do pay you this compliment and genuinely mean it, there are others who do it with the sole intention of scamming you. Generally, with the above compliment, they will also hand you a business card and if you call them, they know that you can easily be manipulated. Remember the episode in ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’ where Robert gets “discovered”?

Signs you are being scammed

If someone does hand you a business card and you cannot resist the invitation, be on the lookout for signs that to may be getting scammed. When you walk into a modeling agency, if see many others who are there for the same reason as you, ask them how they found out about this ‘opportunity’ – was it a talent screening call, or were they all invited to call up and then asked to come in? Do they have similar stories as you of being ‘discovered’?

When you arrive, if you find that everyone working there is pushy about everything from registering to taking one of the many offers they have available, you should start thinking that there may be an ulterior motive involved. Another red flag is if they try to sell you a spot in an acting or modeling class, offer you a screen test, or even a photo shoot; but it will cost you a lot of money.

How to Get Started in Modeling on a Shoe String Budget

Modeling is a fun career that can also be extremely profitable – once you get established, that is. There are many money making ideas today but none as glamorous as modeling. But the downside is, if you are not careful, your initial expenses could easily balloon out of control. Use the pointers below to get started in a modeling career on a shoe string budget.

Hire a photographer to take pictures of you. Search for a photographer that is reasonable in pricing; possibly just starting out in his or her own career. Some photographers will work with models who are just getting started and may not have the money to pay for all the photos. They use an exchange program called Time for Prints, or TFP if you are looking for pictures in print or Time for CD, or TFCD if you are going to have your prints transferred to a CD. There is no money required with this type of exchange program. The photographer gets the experience and his or her name out there and you get photos that you can add to your portfolio. Sometimes the photographer may use a photo to advertise their services, which could be great publicity for you as well.

Do You Have What it Takes to Turn Your Good (or NOT!) Looks into Big Bucks?

Considering a career in modeling is something that passes almost everyone’s mind at some point in their life. Of all the money making ideas, this is probably one of the most glamorous. With the right qualifications (which are not limited to just dashing good looks!), you could be making a decent income from modeling, either part time or full time. And if things go your way, this could easily be the path for making big bucks. This guide offers you insight to determine if this is the right option for you.

Initial Investment

Before you begin modeling, you need to build up your portfolio. Your first task will be to arrange a photo shoot. Your photos will be the best way to display your best to clients that are hiring. Have a few body shots and one headshot. Once your photos are in, choose your favorite photos from the session and print a few 8×10 photos. You may also choose a page with several poses printed on it. Each small photo will display your picture in a variety of poses and outfits. Some agencies will request that you leave photos with them when you inquire about a modeling position. You want these photos done by a professional. You can print your resume on the back of the photos in order to promote yourself better.

A photo shoot can cost anywhere from $200 and up. This will vary, depending on the photographer, where you want to go for the shoot, and if they provide hair and make-up designers for the shoot. The more experience a photographer has, the more they can and will charge. If you locate a new photographer, they may trade services with you in order to promote their business and give you the photos you need for your modeling portfolio. This may be a good option to consider if you are very tight on cash for the initial investment. Be sure to inspect the pictures with a very critical eye, since they will be the determining factor of whether you land a gig or not.
